The Irish Workhouse Centre

The Irish Workhouse Centre in Portumna, Co. Galway, stands as a poignant cultural and heritage visitor attraction. Offering a stark portrayal of the often-overlooked history of Ireland’s workhouses, known as Teach na mBocht or the Poorhouse, the centre recounts the tale of this despised institution that operated from the 1840s to the 1920s. The guided tour, lasting approximately one hour, offers a sombre insight into the challenging realities faced by those within. Additionally, as an evolving work in progress, visitors have the opportunity to learn about ongoing conservation and restoration efforts. The Tourist Office for the area is located in the reception area.
