Set amid the stunning lakelands of east Clare, the town of Scariff was an important market town in the past. Once held monthly, Scariff Fair Day is now a thing of the past but the Market House remains as a tribute to those events and their importance to the local people and economy. Standing proudly in the square it now houses the tourist office.
Other nearby remnants of history include outbuildings of the Scariff Workhouse and a six-storey water tower built in 1851 to meet its needs. The Water Tower can be viewed from Riverside Park, which has a newly refurbished playground and upgraded 1km looped walk.
Enjoy a meal at one of the bars in town or at the Garden Café, part of the East Clare Community Co-op, which serves up delicious vegetarian cuisine using produce from the community garden and other locally sourced products.
For those spending longer in the area, there’s plenty to keep you busy. Enjoy boating or fishing on Lough Derg, get the adrenaline pumping at Derg Isle Adventure Centre, take a trip to nearby Holy Island or walk a section of the East Clare Way.
