Lough Derg Lakelands launches a summer of adventure!
3 Counties – 12 Amazing Adventures
The Destination Lough Derg, in association with Fáilte Ireland, and the local authorities of Tipperary, Galway and Clare, are delighted to launch Adventure Lough Derg. This is a new visitor experience for the Lough Derg region which will run throughout the Summer and Autumn of 2021.
The initiative was proposed by the Lough Derg Destination Recovery Task Force in response to the crisis in tourism created by the COVID-19 pandemic. It comprises a series of 12 weekly outdoor challenges suitable for all ages, hosted on a bespoke sports and fitness tracking app using cutting edge technology. The adventures are free to partake in, provide fun, safe experiences for visitors to enjoy in a socially distanced manner. Whether you want to hike to the top of Millennium Cross in Co. Tipperary, discover a 3000-year-old Dolmen in Co. Clare or explore Portumna Forest Park in Co. Galway, there is something for everyone to enjoy along Lough Derg’s stunning shoreline.
Each week, an adventure goes live, and visitors to the region are encouraged to complete the adventure via the app. The bonus is you will then be in with a chance to be nominated the ‘Adventurer of the Week’. A fantastic weekly prize of local artisan craft and design is up for grabs. It includes a specially commissioned Adventure Lough Derg print by Ogonnelloe based artist Lynn Kenny; handmade chocolate from Tuamgraney based chocolatier Wilde Irish Chocolate, speciality hand-roasted coffee from Old Barracks Coffee, Birdhill and three hours bike hire for a family of four with Dick’s Bike Hire in Portumna (with 8 satellite stations located in villages around the lake to choose from).
How to take part
The Adventure Lough Derg app which can be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play guides the user safely along the various adventures set out on the app using mapping technology and interactive features. Each week a different adventure is launched which users much complete to be in with a chance of winning a prize. The app will record automatically that they completed the challenge and record their time. Users can upload photos and videos to the app for that adventure and share easily on social media using the app.
There will also be hundreds of other running, walking and cycling routes from across the region uploaded to the app so users who take part in the weekly adventure can explore other routes in the region.
