Castlelough to Killaloe

12km one way – 4 hour one way

Suitable for strong intermediate level paddlers with a guide

Depart Castlelough heading left (southwest) along a tree-lined shore, moving away from the lake and towards the river. Follow the narrowing river as it turns due south (7.3 km).

Experienced paddlers can cross the 1 km-wide river to the west bank near Brian Boru’s Fort. Continue as the river narrows significantly, crossing again to the west bank while watching for water traffic. Locate the entrance to the Killaloe Canal (11 km).

Paddle down the canal, portaging around a small water barrier via a slip on the right if needed. Travel approximately 500 metres under the main bridge, then exit at the low canal bank on your left, just beyond the public car park. A scenic and historical journey!
