Twomilegate (Ballycuggeran) to Scarriff via Ballynagleragh
17.3km one way – 4 hours one way
This is the longest trail and is only suitable for intermediate to experienced paddlers with reasonable levels of fitness. The wind effect on the water may not be visible until you round the headland into Scarriff bay, you should allow for a shorter journey to Ballynagleragh in the event of poor weather or tiredness
Depart Twomilegate heading left (north), passing the University of Limerick Activity Centre and staying close to the lake shore. Paddle past Annacarriga Holiday Resort and Marina (1.4 km) as the shoreline veers northeast at Tinarana Bay (3.5 km). Pass large private houses and continue as the bank turns northerly at Carrowgar Bay.
The route features a small private harbour, farmland, and forest before reaching Aughinish Point. The shore then turns west into Scarriff Bay, where you’ll find a grassy egress bank at Ballynagleragh, just beyond the forested headland. Paddle past a long island causeway (12.4 km) to reach the mouth of the Scarriff River in the bay’s far west.
Follow the river upstream, passing Reddan’s Pier in Tuamgraney, and turn left into Scarriff Harbour to complete the journey. A varied and rewarding paddle through scenic landscapes!
