Day 1: Banagher to Terryglass

Begin your adventure in Banagher, a vibrant hub for exploring the River Shannon. Start the day with a guided kayaking safari with Mid Ireland Adventure, paddling through the rich wildlife waters before reaching Bullock Island.

After collecting your cruiser, embark on a scenic journey south along one of the Shannon’s most tranquil stretches, taking in the lush wetlands and diverse birdlife.

Arrive in Terryglass, a charming Lough Derg village, where you can enjoy a delicious dinner at Paddy’s Bar or The Derg Inn, both offering a cosy atmosphere and a great selection of locally inspired dishes.

Day 2: Terryglass to Scarriff

Start the morning with a peaceful stroll along Terryglass’ scenic woodland trails before continuing your cruise south towards Scarriff, Co. Clare. The meandering route along the River Scarriff offers stunning landscapes before you moor at Scarriff Harbour or Redden’s Quay in Tuamgraney.

Enjoy a coffee and homemade treat at The Garden Café, a lovely community-run café serving fresh, organic produce. Then, visit Wilde Irish Chocolates for a behind-the-scenes look at a real chocolate factory, complete with samples. Round off the afternoon at McKernan’s Woollen Mills, where you can watch stunning scarves being woven on traditional looms.

For dinner, visit Nuala’s Bar & Restaurant in Tuamgraney, a historic bar known for its homely atmosphere and delicious menu, with something for all tastes.

Day 3: Scarriff to Meelick (via Portumna)

Sail north to Portumna, the largest town on Lough Derg. A short walk from the marina, Portumna Castle & Gardensoffers a fascinating look into 17th-century Irish history. If you’re up for some fresh air, explore the trails of Portumna Forest Park, a nature lover’s paradise with woodland walks and a bird-watching hide.

For lunch, enjoy fresh, locally sourced dishes at CaToCa Fine Food at Portumna Castle. Before setting off, stock up on provisions at O’Meara’s SuperValu in town.

In the evening, continue your journey upriver, passing through Portumna’s swing bridge and Victoria Lock, before mooring at the serene Meelick Quay. Settle in for a tranquil evening with a home-cooked meal and an idyllic sunset walk along the river.

Day 4: Meelick to Banagher

Before heading back, take a walk along the Meelick Weir boardwalk, linking Galway and Offaly, and discover St. Francis’ Church, one of Ireland’s oldest operating churches.

Then, cruise back north to Banagher, ending your adventure where it began.
