72 Hours on Lough Derg – 1

Day 1: Portumna to Garrykennedy

Start your adventure in Portumna, the largest town on Lough Derg. Rent a bike from Dick’s Bike Hire and explore top local attractions at your own pace. Visit Portumna Castle and Gardens, dating back to 1550, before heading to Portumna Forest Park. The park features scenic trails for all levels, with Bonaveen Point offering the most spectacular views.

After a morning on two wheels, relax as you cruise towards Terryglass, a charming Tipperary village. Moor up and enjoy lunch at The Derg Inn, renowned for its seafood mussels and gastropub favourites.

In the afternoon, journey south to Garrykennedy, where you’ll moor beneath the ruins of a 15th-century castle. Take a leisurely stroll along the Lough Derg Way, which runs through the village, before dining at Larkins, a 300-year-old tavern serving local favourites, from wild mushroom bruschetta to ale-battered fish & chips.

Day 2: Garrykennedy to Killaloe

After breakfast, navigate south to Killaloe-Ballina, a historic twin town straddling the Clare-Tipperary border. A morning hike up Tountinna (457m) offers panoramic views stretching from Kerry to Galway. Before setting off, fuel up with a stop at The Wooden Spoon, a cosy café in Ballina known for its superfood salads, raspberry & apple scones, and great coffee.
