Portumna - Cycle - Dick's Bike Hire

72 Hours on Lough Derg – 1

Day 1: Portumna to Garrykennedy

Start your adventure in Portumna, the largest town on Lough Derg. Rent a bike from Dick’s Bike Hire and explore top local attractions at your own pace. Visit Portumna Castle and Gardens, dating back to 1550, before heading to Portumna Forest Park. The park features scenic trails for all levels, with Bonaveen Point offering the most spectacular views.

After a morning on two wheels, relax as you cruise towards Terryglass, a charming Tipperary village. Moor up and enjoy lunch at The Derg Inn, renowned for its seafood mussels and gastropub favourites.

In the afternoon, journey south to Garrykennedy, where you’ll moor beneath the ruins of a 15th-century castle. Take a leisurely stroll along the Lough Derg Way, which runs through the village, before dining at Larkins, a 300-year-old tavern serving local favourites, from wild mushroom bruschetta to ale-battered fish & chips.

Day 2: Garrykennedy to Killaloe

After breakfast, navigate south to Killaloe-Ballina, a historic twin town straddling the Clare-Tipperary border. A morning hike up Tountinna (457m) offers panoramic views stretching from Kerry to Galway. Before setting off, fuel up with a stop at The Wooden Spoon, a cosy café in Ballina known for its superfood salads, raspberry & apple scones, and great coffee.

In the afternoon, hit the water with My Next Adventure, which offers guided kayaking trips tracing the history of the legendary Irish High King, Brian Boru. Paddle along the scenic river, lough, and canal routes while hearing fascinating stories of the past.

Come evening, settle in for an Italian feast at Tuscany Bistro, one of the most ambient restaurants in Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands. Tuck into dishes like seafood risotto, homemade lasagne, and goat’s cheese bruschetta, all paired with a great cocktail selection.

Day 3: Killaloe to Mountshannon

In the morning, make your way northwest across the lake to Mountshannon, a postcard-perfect village. Keep an eye out for white-tailed sea eagles, which have made Lough Derg their home since their reintroduction to Ireland. With a wingspan of up to 2.4m, they are an unforgettable sight.

Spend the afternoon at Mountshannon’s Blue Flag Beach, a lakeside spot perfect for swimming and relaxation. If you prefer an active adventure, My Next Adventure also operates water activities here. For another stunning Blue Flag option, visit Ballycuggeran Beach, just north of Killaloe.

In the evening, unwind at The Snug Pizzeria, a local favourite known for homemade pizzas, wine, and tapas. Some nights, you might even catch an outdoor movie screening to end your day on a high note.

Day 4: Return to Portumna

On your journey back to Portumna, take a moment to spot starling murmurations over the lake. These mesmerising flocks of birds form spectacular aerial displays at dusk, making for an unforgettable sight.

Before heading home, stop for a sweet treat at Portumna Castle Tearooms, where you can indulge in freshly baked cakes and savouries. If you fancy one last lakeside drink, Paddy’s Bar in Terryglass serves up a warm welcome with homemade food and local tipples.

For a unique end to your Lough Derg adventure, why not enjoy a guided gin-tasting cruise along the Shannon with Killaloe River Cruises?

This 72-hour itinerary offers the perfect mix of outdoor adventure, historic sights, great food, and relaxing waterside moments, making it a must-do Lough Derg escape.
