Brian Ború’s Fort – Béal Ború
This large fort was the former homestead of Brian Ború, the High King of Ireland in 1002. When he was crowned, he broke with tradition and choose not to take his seat at Tara in Co Meath. Instead, he decided to rule from his homestead of Killaloe transforming it into the Capital of Ireland from 1002–1014.
The fort had a strategic view of the River Shannon, allowing the inhabitants to keep a close eye on all river traffic and a special eye out for Viking ships.
