Portumna Abbey
Next to Portumna Castle are the beautiful old ruins of Portumna Abbey which has a long history of hosting monks, friars and protestant clergy. The ruins are in excellent condition and still show the remnants of a church, cloisters and a range of domestic buildings. It has a great story attached about how the monks transferred their gold through a secret tunnel guarded by a large wolf to hide it from the marauding Danes. It remains protected as a national monument.
