St Cronan’s 10th Century Church
St. Cronan’s 10th Century Church in Tuamgraney holds the distinction of being Ireland’s oldest continuously used church, with its origins dating back to a 6th-century monastery founded by St. Cronan. A significant ecclesiastical and historical site, Tuamgraney is mentioned in the Annals numerous times between 735 AD and 1582 AD. Notably, Brian Boru, High King of Ireland (1002-1014), played a role in the church’s history, having repaired it and its long-gone round tower. Visitors today enter through the same doorway as Brian Boru did over 1,000 years ago, a rare connection to this historical figure. The church, featuring a marvel of early Christian architecture, is open for unattended visits from April 1st to the end of September, with informative signage explaining its rich history. Outside these times, the unique doorway can still be admired from the outside.
