St. Ruadhan’s Abbey, Lorrha, Co. Tipperary – Lough Derg

Located about 30km from Nenagh in County Tipperary, the village of Lorrha is home to several important ecclesiastical ruins, including that of St Ruadhans Church. The house of worship is located on the site of St Ruadhans monastery, founded in 540.The village of Lorrha boasts a number of fascinating religious sites, including the place where St Ruadhan founded a monastery in 540. The present church ruins, situated about 30km from Nenagh, County Tipperary, date from about 1000.

Visitors to the historic site wont want to miss the opportunity to see the remains of two high crosses, found in the churchyard. They date back to 750 and are among the oldest of their kind in Ireland. St Ruadhans Well, which served as the monastic settlement’s main source of water, is also nearby.
