The Black Castle is a 16th century Gaelic, O’Kennedy tower house located in Coolbawn, North Tipperary, Ireland. This majestic, four-storey tower stands on a rock outcrop in the middle of an ancient bog and is bordered by the pretty, crystal-clear Ballycolliton River. It’s in a scenic, private location, surrounded by fields, woods and forestry and is very close to the shores of the picturesque Lough Derg Lakelands, about two kms away as the crow flies. From the top floors, the views are magnificent and the ruins of Annagh and Cashlaunteigebocht (Poor Teige’s) Castles (both former O’Kennedy strongholds) can be seen as well as the Devil’s Bit Mountain and Silvermine Mountains.

The Black Castle is currently being restored by Sonja and Kevin. They offer a limited number of “overknighters” at the castle each year, which includes a continental style breakfast. “An Overknighter” is for a maximum of 2 adults, where you can travel back 500 years in time and spend the night in the recently restored Great Hall.
