After Sol is a compelling exhibition by artist Mary Conroy that investigates the increasing separation between people and the natural environment.
Influenced by Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism, while remaining firmly connected to craft-based methods, Conroy produces works using unusual natural materials such as plant-based inks, recycled paper, and wild clay. These are paired with drawings created using mass-produced black pens, merging two contrasting realms within a unified visual language.
At the heart of the exhibition lies the contrast between permanence and transformation. The natural materials continue to alter and develop over time, mirroring the cycles of growth, decay, and regeneration found in nature, while the black ink remains constant and unchanged. Through this interplay, After Sol explores humanity’s pursuit of permanence in contrast to the reality of a constantly evolving natural world.
Layered with texture and delicate detail, the exhibition encourages viewers to reflect on their connection to the environment and to consider the delicate relationship between the human-made and the natural world.
